Many individuals among the American television audience are familiar with the name Gordon Ramsay, and likewise his rather ostentatious on-screen persona which, if not for the bleeped-out bits, would likely render a good half of his various shows unwatchable for families. Language notwithstanding, after viewing a few episodes featuring the straightforward chef, my older children began taking a decided interest in food preparation methods, new spices and flavor combinations.
Last year, I wrote a glowing review of Ramsay's book //Healthy Appetite//, the recipes of which were an instant hit in our family and remain so. His latest book //Family Fare// again uses clear and clean design elements, and easy-to-understand directions. It introduces a broad swath of cuisine vocabulary words for the youngsters to Google.
The Baguette & Butter Pudding (strange name, delicious dessert) was unanimously voted as the kids' favorite recipe in the book, while the grown-ups favored the roast lamb with herbed couscous and the tangy Lemon Posset. A few of the suggestions may strike the average American family as odd, such as "Fast Food" menu, featuring baby squid in tomato sauce with sautéed chard. "Eat your tiny squids, Jimmy, or you won't get any of those niko-nese olives on the ... gah! How, is that pronounced?" The book's photographs are a study in and of themselves, picturing a dialed-down Ramsay and some of his family members -- in jeans and T-shirts -- preparing food, carrying pumpkins and scowling at stoves that won't light. As a busy mom, I very much appreciate the "planning your menu" sections with time approximations allowing families to carefully select and compile a truly great meal, together.
